The Importance of Men’s Health Awareness Month: Real Men Know Their Numbers!

Let’s talk about something incredibly important, yet often overlooked: Men’s Health. Specifically, let’s dive into why June is Men’s Health Awareness Month and why we all should not only support it, but actively promote it within our organizations. Yes, we’re going to get serious for a moment, but don’t worry, we’ll sprinkle in some humor because, well, we know that’s how to keep your attention.

Why Do We Need Men’s Health Awareness Month?

First off, let’s face facts. Men are notorious for avoiding the doctor. It’s almost like they think if they don’t acknowledge the issue, it doesn’t exist. But ignorance isn’t bliss when it comes to health. Just because you’re lifting weights, running marathons, or maintaining a Herculean physique doesn’t mean you’re invincible. I can tell you personally, my husband, Maurice Nunes, learned this the hard way. In 2018, he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke due to poorly managed hypertension, despite his rigorous training regime. Maurice’s experience underscores a critical point: being fit doesn’t necessarily mean being healthy.  And unfortunately, he’s far from the only one.  Over the past year we have heard of so many men in their 40s, 50s and 60s get strokes, heart attacks, and severe complications from diabetes and sadly many have passed away.  That should not be happening as most of these conditions are manageable with lifestyle changes.

As wives, sisters, daughters and friends – we’re often the ones nagging the men we love to get themselves checked out.  Yes, I’m sure it’s annoying to all of you on the receiving end– but know that we do it because we love you and want to keep you around!

Positive Motivation

Current neuroscience tells us that using fear to motivate change is about as effective as  trying to catch water with a sieve. Instead, positive incentives are the way to go. So, let’s talk about what really matters to men. Staying healthy, strong, and virile tops the list. And let’s not dance around the issue: many men believe that erectile dysfunction (ED) is an inevitable part of aging. Newsflash – it’s not. ED is often a symptom of underlying health issues like high cholesterol and heart disease. Knowing your numbers can prevent not just serious health issues but also help maintain your, ahem, performance levels.

Positive Incentives: Health, Strength, and Virility

Here’s a breakdown of why knowing your health stats is a game-changer:

1. **Health**: Early detection of health issues through regular check-ups can save lives. It’s as simple as that. The earlier you catch a problem, the easier it is to manage.

2. **Strength**: Who doesn’t want to be strong and resilient? Regular health check-ups ensure you’re not just muscling through life but actually thriving.

3. **Virility**: Let’s be honest, maintaining sexual health is a big deal. Understanding your health metrics helps prevent conditions like ED, which is often an early warning sign of more severe health problems. Staying healthy means staying active in all aspects of life.

Approximately 40% of men are affected at age 40 and nearly 70% of men are affected at age 70.  Which group do you want to be a part of?

Real Men Know Their Numbers

I share Maurice’s story as a poignant reminder that no one is invincible, and these conditions can happen to anyone who is not taking proper care of themselves. His journey from a fitness enthusiast to a health advocate after a life-altering stroke highlights the importance of regular health monitoring. Maurice now lives a holistic lifestyle, tracking his medical statistics and ensuring he knows his numbers. This vigilance has not only restored his health but also transformed his life, allowing him to help others avoid the same fate.

What Can I Do To Help?

1. **Lead by Example**: Share your own health journey or commit to getting your numbers checked. Your actions will speak louder than words.

2. **Create Incentives**: If you’re a leader in your organization, offer incentives for employees who participate in health screenings. Maybe a day off, gift cards, or even a healthy lunch.

3. **Make it Fun**: Host a “Know Your Numbers” challenge or a friendly competition. Remember, men love a bit of competition, and it’s a great way to make health checks less daunting.

4. **Educate and Inform**: Encourage your HR or employee engagement team to provide resources and information about the importance of regular health check-ups. Invite speakers, like Maurice Nunes, to share their stories and insights.

5. **Support and Encourage**: As a leader, foster a supportive environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their health and seeking help.

6. **Live the Life**  Share this story with friends and family and encourage them all to be tested (at least) annually and know their numbers.  Early detection saves lives!

Men’s Health Awareness month is a call to action. It’s about breaking down the stigma and encouraging men to take control of their health. Remember, being healthy, strong, and virile isn’t just about hitting the gym. It’s about knowing your numbers and understanding what’s happening inside your body and making small changes toward living a healthier lifestyle.   Think about your family and how much we love you and want you to stay healthy!

Let’s make Men’s Health Awareness Day a priority. Not just for ourselves, but for our families, our communities, and our futures. Because real men know their numbers, and they’re not afraid to take action.

Stay healthy, stay strong, and remember, good health is true wealth!
